Happy New Year: The Dawn of 2014

Happy New Year                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     I am celebrating with a trembling dog up against my leg while gunshots and fireworks sound off in the neighborhood. I am looking at the older dog sound asleep as are my husband and daughter. This reminds me that the peace and joy of being together at the birth of a new year is more dependent on the love we have as a family (grounded in the assurances of God) regardless of life’s sometimes chaotic circumstances around us.

I have been taking this entire last week of 2013 to really focus and pray about 2014.

What follows is mostly my personal opinion, yet I try to ground my opinion in the truth of God’s Word. So, I hope you will understand as I continue this way.

As I have pondered, prayed and pondered some more I noted that the Bible in the book of Romans 13:1-5 says: “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. 3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; 4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience sake.”

I believe, there is going to be a great mess faced by the people of the United States as the President and the federal government as a majority have mandated that citizens buy healthcare. Obamacare, as it is called has been presented as a solution. Yet, I believe the truth of so many more problems will soon be revealed. I am praying that our governing authorities will correct their mistakes sooner than later.

What once was a personal choice has now been tainted by more regulations of the government. I see so many things wrong with the way all of this is happening. I am not pointing fingers at any one political party. However, there is one party in particular who cries that “big business” is evil, while at the same time, they are promoting “Big Government”. Sadly, Big Brother is not just watching us, but mandating what we do, buy and must pay of our dwindling budgets. I believe that these actions are wrong, but I also believe that God has NOT stopped being in charge and control.

Men have instituted laws against the Constitution upon which this country was founded, the freedoms in which men and women have fought and died for, and against the very principles of free market and choice. Worse than that, it appears to me, that the fiduciary responsibility of our rulers to watch over the people is being led further astray. I am angry, yes, because it appears that our elected officials are governing with tyranny rather than democracy. This is not where my vote went.

Yet I am more sad than angry, because I believe that the United States is heading for a great upheaval and lots of personal pain and suffering is going to take place as a result. However, history has shown us that the American spirit rises time and time again. The revolution, the Civil War, Emancipation, Stock Market Crashes, World Wars, The Great Depression, Oklahoma City and the World Trade Center, Hurricane Katrina, Tornadoes, Floods, Earthquakes, Forest Fires, Blizzards and Power Outages . . . all try to knock the wind out of our sails. Yet, the remnant of those who endure hardship and share their courage, their means and their faith with others prove that we can not only survive . . . but Lord help us . . . we will eventually thrive.

Strength results after trials of testing have burned off the unnecessary to reveal the really important. What is most important for us as we start 2014 is discovering what SHOULD be most important and then helping others do the same!  WHAT is the right thing to do? WHAT is our purpose that we live to achieve?  For me, that includes: knowing God (studying His Word, praying, worshiping, growing and sharing), examining myself as I try to be more in line with what I learn God wants me to be and do, cherishing my family, friends, and the value of life that every person possesses, and finally to confront what is evil, wicked and unjust with the Truth of God’s Word, the Love of the Savior and the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe we are instructed to love justice, show mercy and (with the humility of knowing that we are ALL flawed human beings) show grace to ourselves and each other while we strive for a better future.

Truly this old earth is groaning. THE Day of the Lord is approaching.  There is too little time to help save the lost by introducing them to the One who is perfectly able to save them. Yet, the Lord is tarrying just long enough that every last soul that will choose to “really live” (by placing their faith in Jesus rather than themselves or any other person) will do so.

May your year be filled with the peace that surpasses all  human understanding. May the “love that never fails” fill your 2014 with an abundance of blessings. And may you take a good look around at those who do not yet possess the blessings that you enjoy. I pray we will all share the “good news of great joy” to a world that is lost and in despair.

2014 COULD be the start of eternity for some. That is still one choice that every person still ultimately has to make for himself.
